Annual program designed to provide education and skill-building on issues of responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases for young men in the community returned for another successful year
On Saturday, November 4 Delta Gamma Lambda hosted the 2023 Project Alpha Youth Awareness Seminar at the Cincinnati Union Terminal located at 1301 Western Avenue, from 9 am to 2 pm. The annual program consisted of a series of presentations and informational sessions conducted and facilitated by the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Just under 40 males from ages 12 – 18 registered to attend the 2023 Project Alpha Youth Awareness Seminar to engage in open discussions about responsible behavior in personal relationships. Topics included adolescent pregnancy and parenthood, protecting yourself and your partner, sexually transmitted diseases, and more.
After a small breakfast was served, our very own Brother Alex Harper began the seminar with the presentation Responsibility, Respect, and the role of Males in Relationships with presentation materials from sexetc.org. Brothers from the collegiate chapters helped to facilitate the break out sessions Social media, Violence & Intimidation in Relationships, and Hip Hop and its effect on Males in Relationships as the conversation allowed for attendees to share their perspectives on lyrics about personal relationships and how it impacts their environment and interactions with young women.
Attendees then enjoyed lunch from Chick-fil-A and more presentations followed including Intimate Violence in relationship/The Law as it pertains to you(teens) by Brothers, Emmett Gladden and Brett Isaacs, and Protecting yourself and your partner/ Sexually Transmitted Diseases, presented by Brothers, Edwyn Ventus and Paul Waller. By the afternoon the seminar concluded with attendees being given swag bags for their time and willingness to participate in the seminar.
As mentioned on the Corporate Headquarters website of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, Project Alpha is a national program developed by the Fraternity and was designed to provide education, motivation and skill-building on issues of responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases for young males. The program is sponsored locally by the Delta Gamma Lambda chapter and is conducted as a half-day seminar.
