Delta Gamma Lambda Brothers Turn Out in Full Force to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Avondale

On Saturday, August 22, the City of Cincinnati gathered at the corner of Reading Road and Martin Luther King Drive East in Avondale for a landmark moment: the official unveiling of Cincinnati’s new Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.

The brothers of the Delta Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. were proud to stand on the front lines of this historic event, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to civic leadership, community advancement, and the enduring legacy of our esteemed Alpha brother, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A Long-Awaited Tribute to a Global Icon

The unveiling marks the return of a permanent monument to one of Cincinnati's most prominent intersections. After nine years without a dedicated memorial at the corner—following the relocation of the original 1987 tribute during major highway construction—the city invested in creating a permanent, community-centered space for reflection and inspiration.

Titled The Light of Hope, the centerpiece of the new memorial is a six-and-a-half-foot bronze statue of Dr. King standing at his pulpit, created by sculptor Stephen Hayes and designed by the firm RE:site. Surrounding the statue are six illuminated glass pillars reflecting Dr. King’s core principles of nonviolence. Fittingly, the design also pays direct tribute to local Cincinnati civil rights icons—including Rev. L.V. Booth, Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, and Rev. Damon Lynch Jr.—connecting national history with local activism.
