RECAP: Delta Gamma Lambda Participates in the 48th Annual MLK Commemorative March and Prayer

Updated: Feb 7, 2023

March honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in remembrance of nonviolent ideals and philosophy.

On Monday, January 16, 2023, Brothers from the Delta Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. participated in the 48th annual MLK Day Commemorative March which began outside the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. The March concluded at Washington Park with an interfaith prayer service. The MLK Day Commemorative In-Person Program followed at noon as this year’s theme was ‘Reckoning with Chaos, Creating Community’.

Members of the Cincinnati D9 community came out to support the annual initiative put on by the MLK Coalition whose mission is to strengthen the diverse human community through the promotion and practice of non-violence and understanding. The Coalition achieves this purpose by keeping the memory, ideals and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. alive through a commemorative program that is given each year in the City of Cincinnati, Ohio. City officials, community leaders, organizations, and more also participated in the march to support the day. Participants included Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval, members of Cincinnati City Council, the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, Cincinnati NAACP, and more.

To help honor the day, Delta Gamma Lambda encouraged individuals to donate to the The Hoxworth Blood Center as a way to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. as the blood drive was in his name. The annual ‘MLK Week of Giving’ blood drive, in partnership with the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, MLK Coalition, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Phi Psi Omega Chapter, started on Saturday, January 14 and continued through Sunday, January 22. Donors could visit any of Hoxworth's seven Neighborhood Donor Centers to give blood.

We thank everyone who came out to support the March and the other programs involved in this annual initiative to make it a success. Visit the MLK Coalition’s website for more information on upcoming programs and events.
